U.S. life insurance company MetLife Inc on Tuesday said it expects to report income from continuing operations of $1.38 to $1.58 per share and premiums, fees and other revenues of $8.6 billion in the third quarter.

Metlife Inc. said Tuesday it plans to sell 75 million shares of its common stock in a public offering. The insurer said the offering will boost its capital position and will be used for general business purposes and “potential strategic initiatives.”

MetLife Inc. said Tuesday its third-quarter results will be marked by a drop in investment income and fee revenue amid the downturn in world financial markets.

NEW YORK—-MetLife, Inc. today preannounced its expected results for the third quarter of 2008. Income from continuing operations available to common shareholders for the third quarter of 2008 is expected to be between $1,005 and $1,150 million, or $1.38 to $1.58 per diluted common share.
